Many teachers have thrown up their hands in frustration about the recent wave of 'Zoombombing' incidents on the Zoom video conference service and are looking for quick solutions elsewhere.

  1. If you use Outlook every day, whether for business or personal tasks, you need it to be reliable, however, some users have reported problems whereby they were unable to open the Microsoft Outlook app. Depending on the cause, there are a number of ways to fix this problem.
  2. Apr 09, 2020  Try Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, WebEx for virtual classes. Facebook rolls out standalone Messenger desktop app for Mac. Has opened up to a wider audience looking for a secure solution to.

The New York school system made the decision even easier for them: banning the use of Zoom in the schools. (Elon Musk's Space X company and rival Google also asked employees to remove Zoom from company computers, citing security concerns.)

'I willno longer be able to use Zoom due to the security failure,' writes reader Caroline Pratte, a teacher from Quebec.

Troubles: Zoom issues: People hijacking streams, possible security flaws

Social network: Facebook rolls out standalone Messenger desktop app for Mac, Windows: How it compares

'I am searching for an alternative. For a primary teacher, the most interesting feature of Zoom is to see up to 25 people on the screen at the same time. Kids are missing friends so much, they want to SEE each other.'

Everything she's discovered, she notes, is 'always for business needs.'

What to do?

We have some ideas. Because, beyond the fine print, Zoom rivals actually have some sweetheart deals (as in free) for schools during the COVID-19 crisis.

Microsoft Teams

The software, which is aimed at enterprises, is free for schools, students and teachers who can sign up with their school IDs.

This week, Microsoft went out of its way to invite in educators, noting in a blog post that its privacy controls are designed to not allow for random people to join a meeting and start screaming obscenities or flash pornography, two of the charges that have dogged Zoom. (Those occurred, in part, because the presenter allowed for screen sharing and didn't require a password for entering the meeting.)

'You decide who from outside your organization can join your meetings directly, and who should wait in the lobby for someone to let them in,' Microsoft says. You can also remove participants during a meeting, designate 'presenters' and 'attendees,' and control which meeting participants can present content. 'Advanced artificial intelligence monitors chats to help prevent negative behaviors like bullying and harassment.'

As many as 250 people can be in a meeting.

To sign up for Teams for education, use this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office. The cost to businesses signing up for Teams starts at $5 monthly per user, or $12.50 monthly to get Teams along with Outlook, Word, Excel and SharePoint.

Google Meet

The Google Meet app has consistently been in the top 10 of most downloaded smartphone apps since the COVID-19 crisis began, but for many people, it will be inoperable.

Meet is aimed at businesses and education to offer secure meeting space. Download the app, and you won't be able to do anything with it unless your school or business has signed up for the G Suite service, which is free for education, or $6 per person a month for enterprise.

Then, a new corporate or school ID will be issued to each participant. The presenter can choose who can attend each meeting, and who can live stream or record the session.

Google has waived fees on premium features like the ability to have as many as 250 people in a meeting and live streaming to as many as 100,000 people through September, because of the pandemic.

As many as 100 people can be in a meeting. Sign up here: https://edu.google.com/products/gsuite-for-education

Note: The Meet app is a different animal from the Google Hangouts app, which has no restrictions and is aimed at the general public. Although No. 43 on the iOS app chart, Google had hinted that it would phase out the app in 2020 in favor of the new Duo app, which also is aimed at basic video chatting. Duo is No. 12 in iOS. Neither applications are in the top 50 on the Google Play Android chart, but have come pre-loaded on Android phones. Duo essentially serves as a kind of FaceTime video chat option that can connect either the Android or iOS platform. FaceTime works only with Apple device users.

WebEx

The corporate solution, owned by networking giant Cisco, has opened up to a wider audience looking for a secure solution to Zoom with new free offerings.

Anyone can hold a meeting with WebEx with as many as 100 participants and meet as long as you want. (Zoom is free with a 40-minute limit and will allow you three sessions monthly.) Cisco says the free version of WebEx has advanced security such as the ability to lock and unlock the meeting room. For more advanced features, like encrypted meetings, the rate is $13.50 monthly, or $17.95 monthly with tech support.

However, WebEx has more steps involved than others to join. Once you set up the meeting, you grab the URL and share it. Then your participants will need to click it, then download the Cisco app if they're on a smartphone and enter their name and email before being allowed in. As an alternative to Zoombombing, though, these steps may be welcome.

Up to 100 people can attend the meeting. Sign up: https://www.webex.com/webexremoteedu.html

GoTo Meeting

The corporate entity Logmein is the owner of enterprise-based GoToMeeting, which has made the service available for free for the 'next 3 months.'

As many as 25 people can attend a 'class,' but if the teacher decides to teach it in the 'webinar' format instead, as many as 3,000 can attend. The webinar can be recorded to be viewed at a later date. Logmein says meetings have a 'security lock,' which means participants will have to wait to be let in when locked.

Finding additional information about security concerns on Logmein's website was a challenge, and attempts to reach press representatives for the company weren't answered by publication.

Monthly rates for enterprise customers start at $12.95 monthly for up to 150 participants.

Can't Open Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Will Not Open. How To Fix It In Windows 10

Microsoft Outlook is a part of the 'Office' family of software and services developed by Microsoft. Outlook is mostly used as an email program, however, it also includes features such as contacts management, task management, journal, web browsing, calendar, and note-taking. Today, there are 16 versions of Outlook, the latest being Outlook 2016. You can use it as a stand-alone program or with Microsoft SharePoint Server and Microsoft Exchange Server if you are working in an organization with multiple users - in this way, you can exchange public folders, share mailboxes, calendars, and so on.

There are many useful features in Microsoft Outlook that can help to increase productivity, such as an attachment reminder, which prevents you from sending emails in which you may have forgotten to include an attachment. It can also add various events such as flight or car reservations to your calendar. It can filter important messages so that they are displayed with a higher priority and alert you when an incoming message arrives at Outlook. If you use Outlook every day, whether for business or personal tasks, you need it to be reliable, however, some users have reported problems whereby they were unable to open the Microsoft Outlook app. Depending on the cause, there are a number of ways to fix this problem.

If you cannot open Microsoft Outlook, you might need to disable add-ins, clear and regenerate the navigation pane for the current profile, use the inbox repair tool, or take various other measures. The methods are thoroughly described in the guide below - see if one fixes your Outlook problem.

NOTE: In this guide, we are using Microsoft Outlook Professional Plus 2010, version 14.

Table of Contents:

It is recommended to run a free scan with Combo Cleaner - a tool to detect malware and fix computer errors. You will need to purchase the full version to remove infections and eliminate computer errors.

Reset Navigation Pane

Here, we show how to use one of Outlook's command line switches. These are useful for troubleshooting and automation. In this case, we apply the '/resetnavpane' switch, which clears and regenerates the Navigation Pane for the current profile. This will work in Outlook versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016. Many users reported that corrupted Navigation Pane settings prevented Outlook from starting successfully. To execute the '/resetnavpane' command, open the Run dialog box by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting 'Run' from the contextual menu, or by typing 'run' in Search and clicking the 'Run' result.

In the Run dialog box, type the 'outlook.exe /resetnavpane' command and press Enter or click 'OK'. Check if this solves the problem. If not, restart the computer and try to launch Outlook again.

Delete The Outlook.xml File

If the first method did not work or the executed command was unable to reset the Navigation Pane, try to delete the Outlook.xml file. This file stores the Navigation Pane settings. To find and delete this file, type the '%appdata%MicrosoftOutlook' command in Search and click the result provided.

Select 'Outlook.xml' and click the 'Delete' button in the top pane. Check if you are now able to start Outlook without any problems.

Repair Outlook.pst File

In this method, we show how to use the Inbox Repair Tool, also known as the scanpst.exe. This tool is used to repair corruptions in Outlook's data storage file when Outlook cannot be started or is unable to open a .pst file and displays an error stating that Windows cannot start Microsoft Outlook. This tool can also be used when Outlook is crashing and when there are problems with the import/export process or send/receive errors. To use the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe), you must first locate it. Its location depends on the version of Outlook you are using. These are the locations of the SCANPST.EXE file in different Outlook versions:

Outlook 2016

32-bit Windows C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice16
64-bit Windows C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice16
64-bit Outlook C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice16

Outlook 2013

32-bit Windows C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice15
64-bit Windows C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15
64-bit Outlook C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice15

Outlook 2010

32-bit Windows C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14
64-bit Windows C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14
64-bit Outlook C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14

Outlook 2007

32-bit Windows C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12
64-bit Windows C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12

Outlook 2003

32-bit Windows C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSMAPI
64-bit Windows C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemMSMAPI

If you are using Outlook 2003, note that ' refers to the language you are using in Office 2003. In our example, we are using Outlook 2010, and thus we will find the SCANPST.EXE file in 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14'. Go to the SCANPST.EXE file location on your computer.

Double-click it and click 'Browse..'. You will need to find the Outlook.pst file on your system.

It should be in the Documents folder. In our case, it is located in 'Userstest (our username)DocumentsOutlook Files'. Select the Outlook.pst file and click 'Open'.

Now click the 'Start' button and wait for the repair process to finish. Try to open Outlook again and check if the problem is now solved. If not, restart your computer and try again.

Turn Off Compatibility Mode

Compatibility mode allows the system to emulate an older version of software or to mimic another operating system to allow incompatible or older software to remain compatible with the computer's current state (newer computer hardware or software). In this case, ensure that this mode is not enabled. To check, go to the folder containing the SCANPST.EXE file. Use our list of provided locations and find the OUTLOOK.EXE file. Right-click it and select 'Properties' from the contextual menu.

Find and select the 'Compatibility' tab in the OUTLOOK.EXE Properties window. Make sure that the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' checkbox is unticked and click 'Apply' (if any changes were made).

Restore Previous Version

If none of the methods above work, you can try to restore previous version of the PST file. Note, however, that some recent emails, appointments, and so on will be lost. If you are comfortable with this, you can try this method (or apply it if nothing else works). To restore previous version of the Outlook.pst file, go to the 'DocumentsOutlook Files' folder and right-click the Outlook.pst file. Select the 'Restore previous versions' option and follow the instructions.

Start Microsoft Outlook In Safe Mode

If there are any add-ins installed, running Outlook in Safe Mode will launch it without any add-ins. If Outlook starts in Safe Mode without any problems, this indicated that one or more add-in is causing this problem. To start Outlook in Safe Mode, open the Run dialog box by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Run. Type the 'outlook /safe' command. Press Enter on the keyboard or click 'OK'.

If Outlook starts successfully, you should notice it has started in Safe Mode by the name at the top.

To check if add-ins are causing the problem, you will need to disable/remove them. Click 'File' and then click 'Options'.

Now select the 'Add-Ins' section on the left pane. In the View and manage Microsoft Office Add-ins window, find the 'Manage' option and ensure that it is set to 'COM Add-ins' and click 'Go..'.

Uncheck all enabled Add-Ins and click 'OK'. Close Outlook and try to open it again (in normal mode). If you were able to open it without any problems, this indicates that one or more add-in is causing the problem. Try to enable them one-by-one and check where the problem starts to occur.

Create A New Outlook Profile

Simply create a new Outlook Profile and then copy the current Outlook data file into the new account. To create a new account, go to Control Panel by typing 'control panel' and clicking the result.
